A beaker. Holle Sjoerds, Bolsward, 1615
The body of trumpet shape, resting on a moulded and reeded foot with a narrow band of nail-heads,…
This beautifully embossed silver dish depicts four scenes from the life of Christ within oval medallions:
The Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38)
The Nativity (Luke 2:1-7)
The Circumcision (Luke 2:21)
The Adoration of the Magi (Matthew 2:1-12).
Between the medallions, embossed vase candlesticks are visible. The edge of the smooth, slightly lowered center is bordered by a band of overlapping laurel leaves. Within the smooth center, an unidentified coat of arms is engraved. The smooth outer rim of the plate is folded into soft organic shapes.
From around 1670, the use of floral motifs as decoration in embossing became fashionable, so much so that it was internationally referred to as the Dutch floral style.
It’s noteworthy that Jan van Ossevoort chose his own path in decorating and did not conform to the prevailing style with this dish.
